In a recent unimaginable homicide incident, fifteen year old
Misty “Ariel” Renee Kornegay and her sister eleven year old Nicole Kornegay
have been charged in the shooting and killing of their older brother. Both of
the sisters now face charges of premeditated murder, while the girls’ parents,
Keith Kornegay of thirty seven years and Misty Kornegay of thirty three years,
are facing charges of child neglect. Police officers in the small town of White
Springs learned that the sisters had run away from home and were discovered at
a nearby Dollar General store. Murray Smith, Columbia County Sheriff, said that
when the sisters were approached by police, they “informed [an officer] of a
shooting at their residence” (Lohr, 1).
Deputies were dispatched to the Kornegay family’s White Springs home,
where they found the body of the girls’ sixteen year old brother Damien
Kornegay collapsed on the living room floor. Police announced he was “shot one
time and pronounced dead at the scene” (Lohr, 1). It is believed that earlier
that day the fifteen year old sister took a handgun from their parents’ bedroom
and shot her brother with it. Eleven year old Nicole Kornegay’s role in the
shooting is still unclear. For now, Smith only said she “assisted her fifteen
year old sister” (Lohr, 1) in the commission of the crime. Authorities have yet
to officially comment on a possible motive, although Ariel Kornegay told police
that her brother had beat her up the day of the shooting. Five years prior, in
2010, police had been called to the same residence in regard to a “report of
‘inappropriate behavior’ that had allegedly involved Damien and Ariel Kornegay”
(Lohr, 1) but no charges were files and details of the incident remain unclear.
Keith and Misty Kornegay’s three year old child was found alone in the home
upon the discovery of Damien’s body. The child has been placed in the
guardianship of the Florida Department of Children and Families. The parents
were apparently out of town at the time of the homicide. The sisters are
expected to make their first court appearance this week.
